The Atticus Open Data Project is a collaborative of legal professionals and law students around the world working to curate and label an open-sourced training dataset of legal contracts for AI research.
To that end, the Atticus Open Data Project is launching the Atticus Open Data Student Fellow Program in partnership with The Atticus Project, a non-profit organization, Berkeley Center for Law and Business, and LexLab at UC Hastings Law. We are looking for motivated law students to join us as Atticus Open Data Student Fellows.
What is the Open Data Student Fellow Program?
- This program will offer law students and non-legal professionals the opportunity to learn important legal concepts and how to find them in legal contracts. Example topics include:
- Diligence and AI-enabled disclosure schedules
- Restrictive covenants (MFN, exclusivity, non-compete, etc.)
- Contract end dates and post-termination obligations
- IP license analysis
- Participants will have access to a set of self-paced learning modules and weekly/daily hands-on workshops hosted by experienced attorneys to practice legal contract review skills.
- Participants who successfully complete the program and pass certification tests will receive certificates from Atticus Open Data Project, BCLB, and LexLab, demonstrating proficiency in legal contract review in one or more practice areas.
Why should I apply?
- Learn practical legal skills. Contract review is an essential skill for practicing attorneys. This program will provide you with the opportunity to learn hands-on contract review skills under the supervision of experienced attorneys on a weekly basis, and get certified to demonstrate proficiency in legal contract review in one or more practice areas.
- Industry Changer. The inability to review large volumes of legal contracts timely and accurately has hindered the legal professionals’ ability to keep up with today’s agile and data-driven executive decision making. By creating a labeled dataset, we are creating a future where attorneys can dedicate their time and brainpower on high-value analytical work instead of menial and time-consuming contract review. The Atticus Project is a first in the Legal industry. There are so many unanswered questions that we need to tackle together. We hope you will join us to be a part of the solution to our day-to-day legal challenges.
- Knowledge of AI. You will have the opportunities to work with AI tools and collaborate with AI and data scientists and gain a deep understanding of how AI works in legal contract review. You will learn to speak the language of the AI developers and researchers.
- Shaping the Future of Legal AI Tools. By designing the training dataset, you will have the opportunity to help shape the Legal AI development in a direction that you think is ethical and good for lawyers and our society in general.
How long is the commitment?
- 8 weeks for the Summer Program (full-time), or
- 3 months for the Spring Program (part-time), and 3 months for the Fall Program (part-time)
What would I do?
- Complete one of the following program(s)
- Full-Time Summer Program (5 hours minimum per day for a minimum of 8 weeks); or
- Part-Time Fall Program & Spring Program (6 hours minimum per week for a minimum of 20 weeks).
- Annotate legal contracts and attend training workshops
- Create and update training materials
Will I be paid?
- No. This is an unpaid program. The Atticus Project is a 501(c)(3) organization and hours contributed to The Atticus Open Project are eligible for pro bono hours.
