Join the Women in Business Law Initiative and Kate Zuby, career counseling at the Tang Center, for two workshops on building your career and setting up for success! Kate will present a two-part coaching session that will provide some tips about the network and interviewing process of the professional world. This will be offered to all mentees and mentors interested. The coaching sessions include strategies, activities and break-out room segments for participants to find out how each tip can work for them personally to prepare them for career readiness. Workshops will be held at 6-7 PM on February 18th and March 4th. Please direct any questions to bclb@law.berkeley.edu.

The Sexual Harassment in Education Conference is a virtual program held by Berkeley Law to host a discussion addressing sexual harassment on a global scale. Attendees will have access to plenary sessions, workshops, keynote speakers, and opportunities to speak to fellow lawyers and scholars about the governing issues of sexual harassment, specifically within law and policy fields. Gender parity in the legal profession continues to move at a glacial pace. Case in point, a 2019 report by the American Bar Association found that only 30% of Fortune 500 general counsels and less than 25% of partners in the 200 largest firms are women.” There is no argument that gender inequality is a systemic issue. As such, it will take every player in the system to reverse it. Our conversation with Rose Ors (JD ’83) featured her perspective of what it takes for women to advance in the legal profession.

The financial world can play a critical role in advancing financial inclusion. Guest speakers explored the challenges and opportunities facing women in finance and discuss the key developments affecting the industry. The panel addressed the key professional skills and challenges needed to empower women in this space and overall how the financial world could have a stronger role in promoting inclusion, financial health, and a more inclusive economy. Speakers included: Abbye Atkinson (Assistant Professor of Law, Berkeley Law), Brian Wheeler (Managing Partner and General Counsel, Softbank), and Denise Ho (Partner and Deputy General Counsel, Softbank).

Long underrepresented in the science and technology fields, women are pursuing such careers in greater numbers, but they are doing so amid a persistently challenging and unwelcoming culture. As the field of legal tech and VC grows, the law and the legal profession will need to promote greater innovation and inclusion. This panel aimed to address what are the necessary steps to reach a more equitable environment and how they can be implemented in these fields. Speakers included: Gina Marek and Maggie White (attorneys at Gunderson Dettmer), Michelle Fernandes (Lead counsel at Index Ventures), and Vanessa Wu (Rippling GC).
