Registrar’s Student FAQ

Due to the global health crisis, the Registrar’s Office will be moving our services to online support.  Please feel free to contact us at registrar@law.berkeley.edu

HOW MUCH DOES EACH TRANSCRIPT/LETTER COST?

There is no charge for letters, forms, or paper transcripts.  PDF transcripts cost $1.90 each.

CAN I HAVE MY TRANSCRIPT EMAILED OR FAXED?

We do not fax transcripts.  You can request a PDF transcript through Cal Central that can be emailed.

CAN I HAVE MY LETTER/FORM EMAILED OR FAXED?

Yes.  We are able to fax letters and forms.  Along with the fax number, please also indicate the full address for where you would like the original sent.  If no address is specified, the original letter/form will be kept in your permanent file.

WHAT LETTERS CAN I REQUEST?

VERIFICATION OF ENROLLMENT:
This letter verifies your past or current enrollment.  To confirm full-time enrollment, a student must be enrolled in no less than 10 credits (not including waitlisted classes).  In order to verify that you are registered, you have to have paid at least 20% of your fees for that semester, and have no blocks against your registration.

GRADUATION CERTIFICATION:
This letter verifies that you completed all academic requirements and received your degree.  The letter specifies the degree and date of degree conferred.

VERIFICATION OF ATTENDANCE:
This letter verifies your past or continued registration.  Although we cannot verify attendance for terms in which you are not currently registered, we can verify your expected graduation date or your expected registration for future terms.

LETTER OF GOOD STANDING:
This letter verifies that you are in good standing, meaning you have no Academic Honor Code violations on file, are not currently on probation, and have not been academically disqualified from the law school.

OTHER:
You may specify what you need the letter to say if it is not reflected in one of the above choices.  As long as the information you request can be confirmed by our office, we can generally produce a letter of verification.

Typical form letters that we have available include:
No GPA/No Ranking
Grades Not Available

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

Usually we can produce them quickly, but our maximum turn-around time for any transcript request is 5-7 business days from time of receipt for requests received by fax or mail.  Our official, published turn-around time for any letter or form request is 7-10 business days from time of receipt for requests.  During peak times, however, it could take seven business days so please plan ahead.  All transcript requests are sent through regular U.S. mail, so mailing time will depend on them.  Letters are sent through regular U.S. mail, but may also be faxed or emailed.

DO YOU HAVE A RUSH SERVICE?

Our policy is to produce each request as fast as we can, but please let us know if there are special circumstances for your request.  For expedited mailing, you may provide a FedEx shipping label.  Please do not send credit card information to us, as we cannot use it for shipping your documents.

WHAT IS AN “OFFICIAL” TRANSCRIPT?

An official transcript contains the Registrar’s signature and a seal on secure paper or PDF.  By our criterion, transcripts do not need to be in a sealed envelope to be official.

If you need your paper transcript(s) in an individually sealed and stamped envelope, please include this request in the “Special Instructions” on the Request for Law School Transcript form.

CAN I GET COPIES OF TRANSCRIPTS FROM PREVIOUS DEGREE PROGRAMS FROM MY STUDENT FILE?

Yes.  You may get unofficial copies of transcripts and/or your LSDAS report from your permanent file.  For official copies you will need to contact the institution that issued your degree.  Students who need an undergraduate transcript from Berkeley can contact the main campus Office of the Registrar at orreg@berkeley.edu.

If you are not a current student or recent graduate, please allow up to ten working days for us to process this request.

CAN SOMEONE ELSE PICK UP or ORDER MY TRANSCRIPT/LETTER?

Your transcripts and academic information are highly confidential and cannot be released to anyone without your written permission.  If you would like someone to order or pick up your transcript or a letter on your behalf, please include the person’s full name on your request.  He/she will be required to show photo ID.  Note that your authorization must include the complete information required to order a transcript or verification letter.

WHEN WILL CURRENT GRADES or DEGREE CONFERRED REFLECT ON MY TRANSCRIPT?

Grades for the current term will reflect on your transcript approximately 4 weeks after the term ends.   If you need your current grades to show on your transcript, check the box “HOLD FOR CURRENT GRADES” under Special Requests on the Request For Law School Transcript form.

If you recently graduated, your degree conferred will reflect on your transcript approximately 6 weeks after the term ends.  If you need degree conferred to show on your transcript, check the box “HOLD FOR DEGREE POSTING” under Special Requests on the Request for Law School Transcript form.

DO YOU EVER AUTOMATICALLY PRINT OUT TRANSCRIPTS?

Yes.  If you are a 3L or LLM taking a Bar immediately after graduating, we will send your transcript to the appropriate Bar examiner office.  Make sure you have given us any Law School Certification forms that are required by your state and indicate the state where you intend to sit for the exam.
