Working with the Online Team

Online Course Development Process

The online course development process is comprised of three primary stages:

Pre-build stage: Instructional design team collaborates closely with faculty member to plan and design course content for effective online delivery; define learning objectives linked to course activities and assessments. Catalogue existing content and identify potential gaps. Identify strategy to incorporate instructor’s unique teaching style in online delivery. Develop timeline for production deliverables.

Build stage: Convert existing content for online delivery and produce new content, including production of multimedia learning objects (video, audio, narrated slideshow, etc.). Drafts of recordings are reviewed and final edits made. Create course shell in the learning management system and populate with content.

Deliver stage (Teach Course): Course is launched. Instructors and teaching assistants moderate discussions and facilitate assessments, interact with students via course announcements and individual messages, hold office hours. Designer assists with ongoing modifications made as necessary during delivery. Designer gathers technical/design-related feedback to optimize the course. Instructor facilitates and grades midterm and/or final exams.
