Author Copyright Agreements

The University must sign off on all copyright agreements prior to their being sent to authors!

The Law School uses 2 types of Author Copyright Agreements:

Author ASSIGNMENT Agreement:
The author assigns the copyright of his/her article to the University (Default agreement used for all Journals with the exception of BTLJ and CLR)

Author LICENSING Agreement:
The author retains the copyright to his/her article, and licenses its use to the University

Please use the Assignment Agreement in all cases unless the author specifically requests to retain his/her copyright. This makes things easier on our end in terms of processing reprint permissions, as well as including articles on electronic databases.

One agreement must be submitted for each author. If there is more than one author in an article, in addition to filling out a form for each author, you will need to notify me which is the primary author.

All of our author copyright agreements are signed off on by the Business Contracts Office on behalf of the Regents of the University of California, which holds the copyright to the journals.

The agreements MUST be signed on behalf of the University PRIOR TO sending them to the authors for signature.

As the University signed agreement has a turnaround time of up to a couple of weeks, at the time the article is accepted, you may want to email a copy of the copyright agreement to the authors. That way, we can take care of any problems/changes that the authors might have well before the issue is getting ready to go press.
