PLSC assembles privacy law scholars and practitioners from around the world to discuss current issues and foster greater connections between academia and practice. It brings together privacy law scholars, privacy scholars from other disciplines (economics, philosophy, political science, computer science), and practitioners (industry, legal, advocacy, and government).
PLSC is a paper workshop. There are no published proceedings, and after the event, papers are not available. Because authors’ drafts are works in progress, we do not publicly release these writings, nor do we publicize them (no Tweeting, blogging, etc.), as authors’ ideas are often inchoate and need incubation for full development.
At PLSC, papers workshops are led by a “commenter” who facilitates a discussion among participants on an author’s paper. Authors are encouraged to participate in “listening” mode. There are no panels or talking head events at PLSC.
All participants are expected to read and be prepared to discuss one paper per session (usually a total of 8 papers), and thus PLSC requires significant preparation. We recommended that participants devote 1.5 to 2 days of reading to prepare prior to the conference.
PLSC is an annual event, alternating between Berkeley Law and The George Washington University School of Law. Participation is by invitation only. Last year, PLSC had 260 participants. We have no invites left for 2016.
International Association of Privacy Professionals Paper Award
The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) is sponsoring an award for two papers presented at PLSC. The two winning authors will each receive $2500 from IAPP, an opportunity to present the paper at the IAPP Privacy Academy 2016 (travel will be provided for up to two authors of each paper), and an opportunity to publish an abstract or summary of the paper in the Privacy Advisor. The criteria are overall excellence and relevance to the practice of privacy law.

Facebook Hosts Privacy@Scale Pre-Conference on May 31

FAQ for PLSC
Q. What happens in a workshop?
At PLSC, papers are introduced by a “commenter.” This commenter discusses the basic contours of the paper and invites the workshop group to discuss themes and questions raised by it. The author participates in the discussion, but does not present or otherwise direct the conversation. The idea is to help the author understand how others interpret the paper, and to give advice on content and even the strategy of getting published. Workshops are both informal and friendly in nature.
Q. What is the dress code?
Whatever you want to wear. Really. Most participants wear something approximating business casual.
Q. Do I need to submit a paper?
No. Most PLSC participants do not write a paper for PLSC and instead participate in the various paper discussions.
Q. I like to use slides. Is there a projector and a laptop in the workshop room?
No. Our workshop (and economic) model is based on participant conversation, not presentation.
Q. When will papers be available?
Authors’ drafts are due this year on Friday, May 6, 2016. As of March, several papers are already submitted.
Q. Where are the papers?
We circulate a link to our conference system to participants by email. Shortly after the conference, we delete the papers.
Q. I’d like to report/blog/tweet about the conference, what is the hashtag?
A. Because authors’ drafts are incomplete and ideas inchoate, we ask that you do not publicize the papers or discussions at PLSC. The point is to help scholars think through their work, and thus we do not blog or tweet, or include journalists at the PLSC.
Q. Are there conference proceedings?
No. There is no commitment (or opportunity) to publish.
Q. What if my abstract is not accepted? Have I just forfeited the fee?
The point of PLSC is to build a community around privacy scholarship and so we think you ought to still participate in the event. But if you want to cancel, you are free to do so. You may ask for a refund until May 1, 2016 by emailing bclt@law.berkeley.edu.
Q. I need to cancel, can I get my fee refunded?
Yes, so long as you ask for a refund by May 1, 2016 by emailing bclt@law.berkeley.edu.
Q. May I pay the fee by check?

Q. How can I register for PLSC 2016?
Apologies, you cannot. PLSC is an invite only conference, and as of February 2016, the event is beyond capacity. Please do not email Adam or Abraham about this.
Q. When is PLSC 2017?
PLSC is always scheduled for the first Thursday and Friday of June. Thus, we should meet June 1-2, 2017 at a location to be determined in Berkeley.
