What: Lani Guinier will give a talk titled “Transforming Democracy with Cross-Racial Coalitions.” Guinier will share her vision of a social justice movement that would transform the nature of democracy in America and discuss the power of building grass-roots coalitions between races. A book signing will follow the talk.
Guinier first came to the public’s attention in 1993 when President Clinton nominated her to head the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. Her nomination drew a great deal of controversy and her name was withdrawn without a confirmation hearing. She was the first black woman nominated for this position. Guinier is a professor of law at Harvard University Law School and author of The Miner’s Canary and Who’s Qualified?
