Robert J. Birgeneau was inaugurated as Berkeley’s ninth chancellor on Friday, April 15, at 2 p.m. in Zellerbach Auditorium on the UC Berkeley campus. The ceremony featured student musical and dance performances.
Other inaugural activities open to the public included symposia on the theme of “Frontiers of Education and Knowledge” on April 14, 15 and 16. On Saturday, April 16, Dean Christopher Edley moderated a symposium panel, “A Socratic Dialogue: A Country of Immigrants-What is an American?” The discussion looked at what it means to be an American and a citizen of the world in the 21st century.
