The Berkeley Journal of International Law (BJIL) hosted the school’s annual symposium honoring Professor Stefan Riesenfeld on Tuesday, April 5 at 12:30 p.m. in Booth Auditorium. This year’s honoree is Lakhdar Brahimi, special advisor to the secretary general of the United Nations. Brahimi was introduced by Dean Edley, as well as last year’s honoree, Professor Richard Buxbaum. Brahimi’s address discussed his experiences in international relations, democracy promotion and the future of the United Nations. A former UN special envoy to Afghanistan, he was entrusted with overall authority for the political and human rights relief, recovery and reconstruction activities of the UN there. Brahimi, who also led the UN Observer Mission in South Africa until the 1994 democratic elections, has undertaken special missions on behalf of the secretary general to Zaire, Yemen, Liberia, Nigeria, Sudan and Haiti. As well, he has served as Special Envoy of the Arab League Tripartite Committee to Lebanon, which mediated the end of the Lebanese Civil War. A reception in the Goldberg Room followed his talk.
