Gloria Flora, nationally-recognized as an environmental hero for her efforts to protect public lands, will be honored at the Ecology Law Quarterly‘s (ELQ) 35th anniversary celebration on April 14. Flora, director of Sustainable Obtainable Solutions, will headline the evening program. In addition, incoming Editor-in-Chief Casey Roberts will announce winners of 2006 summer fellowships and student writing awards, including the Harmon prize winner whose work will be published in a future issue of the journal.
ELQ was founded in 1970 by a handful of San Francisco attorneys who suggested to the fledgling Boalt Environmental Law Society that they establish a publication dedicated to environmental law. ELQ’s first issue was published as a joint venture with the California Law Review. The student-run publication is now considered the nation’s premiere environmental law journal. ELQ gained international renown in 1990 when it received the Global 500 award from the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the only law journal to be so honored.
ELQ plays a critical role in Boalt’s Environmental Law Program. ELQ sponsors an Environmental Career Conference and promotes writing and publication through its awards, the ELQ alumni organization, the Ecology Law Research Institute (ELRI), and ELQ, its preeminent quarterly publication. The most recent issue of ELQ contains a feature by Michael Bhargava ’06, 2005 Harmon prize winner, entitled “Of Otters and Orcas: Marine Mammals and Legal Regimes in the North Pacific.”
