- The Marvin Gaye Collection was released.
- San Francisco 49ers win Super Bowl XXIV, defeating the Broncos 55-10, becoming the 1st team to win two consecutive Super Bowls with two different head coaches.
- Oakland A’s Bob Welch became 1st 25 game winner in 10 years.
- Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years imprisonment in South Africa.
- Demolition on the Berlin Wall began.
