Local children living in poverty will have greater access to healthcare thanks to an exciting collaboration between the East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) and Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland (CHRCO). The partnership establishes a weekly hospital-based legal clinic to help eligible CHRCO families obtain legal services, including housing advocacy, immigration assistance and services to increase access to health insurance. Medical-legal collaborations among public-interest lawyers and pediatricians, such as the EBCLC-CHRCO venture, have emerged over the past 15 years to address growing healthcare needs among low-income families, particularly young children who suffer disproportionate ill health from lead poisoning, asthma and obesity.
