European Data Protection Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli and Berkeley Law Professor Paul Schwartz

Giovanni Buttarelli is serving a five-year term as European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), where he is tasked with ensuring that European institutions and bodies respect the right to privacy and data protection when they process personal data. The EDPS also advises European member state data protection authorities and the European Parliament and Commission, making Buttarelli a key commentator and leader on European privacy law. A member of the Italian judiciary, Buttarelli has held several positions in government and teaches privacy at Lumsa University.
