Reading The Hebrew America: The Double Reception of The Hebrew Teacher
Wednesday, April 2, 2025 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Event Navigation
Originally published in Hebrew in 2018, Maya Arad’s collection of novellas The Hebrew Teacher was received by Israeli readers as a timely extension of Hebrew literature beyond the geographical borders of the state of Israel. When the book appeared in English translation in early 2024, many readers reflected on its “timeliness” within the current atmosphere pervading American campuses. Maya Arad, an Israeli-born American and a major figure in contemporary Hebrew literature, will speak with Yael Segalovitz (Israel Institute Visiting Professor at HDI) about the experience of writing Hebrew at this time, in this place: What does Hebrew literature written in America contributes to Israeli readers, and what is it that an American audience expects now from Hebrew literature?
Maya Arad, Author of twelve Hebrew books of fiction; Writer in Residence, Taube Center for Jewish Studies at Stanford University
Yael Segalowitz (Moderator), 2024–2025 Israel Institute Visiting Professor at the Helen Diller Institute; Lecturer at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
