The course will examine constitutional law concerning criminal investigations. Topics include the role of prosecution and defense counsel, search and seizure, police interrogation, the exclusionary rule, eyewitness identifications, and the assistance of counsel. In addition to doctrine, we will regularly discuss public policy and lawyering strategies. A major theme of the course looks at how the Supreme Court's decisions have contributed to issues of race and policing in the United States.

Students will be expected to attend class and participate in discussions throughout the semester.

The grade will be based on a final examination. It will be an open-book, open-notes eight hour take-home exam that can be taken any time during the exam period.
