Reaching Berkeley Law J.D. Students

Looking to help Berkeley Law students get to know your organization or law firm?

Here are some suggestions, and feel free to contact anyone on the CDO staff for ideas specific to your needs.

Coordinate with Student Organizations and Journals

Employers can directly contact any of the more than 50 organizations and 11 student journals to propose hosting an event that is relevant to their membership. This a great way to be able to host an event on campus, since Berkeley Law’s policy requires you to have a on-campus host in order to hold events at Berkeley Law. A list of student organizations with links to their websites is available here.

Participate in CDO Programs

The CDO offers a number of programs each semester on a wide variety of topics related to careers in law, and we often rely on speakers who have volunteered. Contact the CDO at career@law.berkeley.edu to be placed on our speakers list for programs related to your organization’s work.

Posting Event, Diversity or Other Opportunities for Berkeley Law Students

The CDO posts employer receptions, conferences, programs, or diversity opportunities on internal pages for students. Contact Elizabeth Granlund for more information.

Participate in Mock Interview, Moot Court or Mock Trial Programs

Attorneys are always needed for these annual programs as interviewers and judges. Contact Diana DiGennaro for moot court, Donna Petrine for mock trials, and Elizabeth Granlund for the Career Development Office (CDO) mock interview programs.

Sponsor Split Summers or Summer Fellowships

If you are a law firm, sponsor a split public interest summer or offer a fellowship to a student working at a public interest organization or judicial externship through the Berkeley Law Summer Fellowships program. Contact the Berkeley Law Alumni Center for more information.

Attend Public Interest/Public Sector Fairs

Each fall, over 80 non-profit and government employers attend the Berkeley Law Public Interest/Public Sector Internship and Career Fair, a “table talk” event co-sponsored by Career Development Office and the Field Placement Program. Public interest and public sector employers are also welcome to participate in the CDO’s on-campus interviewing programs each fall and spring.

Berkeley Law–along with the eight other Northern California law schools and One Justice–also co-sponsors the annual Public Interest/Public Sector Career Day (PI/PS Day). Each year, more than 100 public interest organizations and state and federal government agencies come to PI/PS Day to talk with students and graduates about their work and to interview students and graduates for summer and post-graduate employment opportunities.

Host Off-Campus Receptions

Non-profits, government agencies, and law firms are all welcome to host informal social receptions students any time during the fall, and spring semesters. Hosting a reception can be a useful way to inform students about your organization and develop relationships with students. Due to space constraints, it is a new Berkeley Law policy that external organizations cannot host events on Berkeley Law’s campus. They must be co-sponsored with a student organization, or other unit on campus. That being said, you are welcome to host an off-campus reception preferably close to campus. Prior to organizing an information  reception, please contact our office at career@law.berkeley.edu to discuss your proposed event, including dates and locations. To view all events taking place at the law school visit the Berkeley Law Events Calendar

The CDO can assist in advertising your event to students by listing it in our internal events page for students. Feel free to also promote the event to Student Organizations.

It is important to understand that most law students have very demanding schedules, and there is no way to guarantee or predict how well attended your event might be. Employers who wish to schedule an event should first contact the CDO to arrange a date that does not conflict with another one of our career-related programs. Keep in mind, too, that there are dozens of student organizations and institutional centers that also plan events for students, and there is no way for the CDO to provide a comprehensive conflict check for any event.
