Course Start: January 10, 2012

This seminar will offer each student an opportunity to conduct directed research and writing on a topic relating to ocean governance. The focus of the weekly discussions of readings-- consisting of cases, scholarly works, and policy papers--will be on the UN Law of the Sea Convention and ocean policies, including such topics as ecosystem management, piracy and terrorism at sea, dispute settlement principles and implementation, transport at sea, nuclear issues, and boundary issues. Students are asked to select a paper topic, for approval, early in the semester; papers will be eligible for the Writing Requirement and due on the last day of final examination week. Several visiting experts from practice, government organizations, and the academic world are scheduled to make special presentations, some to be available for individual consultation with the seminar students.

Enrollment is limited; students are asked to apply ( attaching a short c.v. and a full list of courses completed to date, with a statement (optional) of any special topic of interest for the research paper.

This course may satisfy the Writing Requirement.
