Using a combination of lecture, class discussion, audio-visual materials, various skills-development exercises and role-play, this course will provide students with an opportunity to acquire or deepen understanding of how and why the process works and to take their dispute resolution skills, whatever they may be at the start of the semester, to a much higher level by the conclusion of the course. Students will be exposed to the history, theory and law that provides the foundation for the mediation process and will acquire practical knowledge and new or refined skills in a safe and supportive environment. The theory and skills addressed are those necessary to effectively participate in a mediation, whether in the role of mediator, attorney or party. Particular attention will be paid to the ethical dilemmas that arise within a dispute resolution process like mediation and to the continuing development of dispute resolution theories, law, applications, regulation, techniques and attitudes. There are no prerequisites for this course.
