The class will evaluate the manner that traditional fields of law operate within the specialized field of sports. These fields include tort, contracts, labor, intellectual property, and antitrust law, The course will examine the special circumstances of the sports industry where competitors privately order the ground rules of their competitive framework, and collectively bargain with the athletes. Included also will be specific sports issues relating to gender and racial equity, sports medicine, and media rights. The class will have an open book final exam.

Classroom discussion will be an important part of the course. The casebook materials will be augmented by real-time events, such as labor disputes, bankruptcy of a franchise, or other circumstances that augment the theme of the course.
Most time will be spent on various professional sports, but there will be some coverage of amateur sports as well.

The instructor was the President of the Oakland Athletics between 1980-87, a Board Member of the Women's Professional Tennis Association, and coached men's freshman rowing at Berkeley.
