Jorde Symposium 2023: The Philosophy of Amendment

Join us for the annual Jorde Symposium featuring Professor Jill Lepore. She will reflect on the philosophical origins of the Article V amendment process as “the epitome of the eighteenth-century idea of progress,” considering what became of this optimistic vision of constitutional change and what it means for constitutionalism today.

Lecturer

  • Jill Lepore, David Woods Kemper ’41 professor of history and law at Harvard University, where she directs the Amendments Project. She is also a staff writer at The New Yorker. Her many books include the international bestseller, These Truths: A History of the United States.

Commentators

  • David Pozen,  Charles Keller Beekman Professor of Law, Columbia Law School

  • Sanford Levinson, W. St. John Garwood and W. St. John Garwood Jr. Centennial Chair in Law at the University of Texas Law School and Professor, Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin.
