Ph.D. Dissertation

A dissertation committee should be appointed not later than three months after successful completion of the qualifying examination. The dissertation committee is appointed by the Dean of the Graduate Division upon recommendation of the Graduate Adviser. The normal composition of the committee contains two JSP faculty members, one of whom serves as the chair. A third, “outside” member of the committee is a regular faculty member from another campus department. (A member of the regular law faculty, or a JSP faculty member with a joint-appointment in another department, cannot qualify as the “outside” committee member.)

The dissertation is expected to be completed, and the degree awarded, not later than the end of the sixth year of work for students enrolled only in the Ph.D. program and the seventh year of work for those also enrolled in the law school’s J.D. program.
