This seminar will explore the relevance of criminological theory to contemporary criminal justice law and policy. During the semester we will closely examine several areas of criminological research, that have had a long term influence on crime policy including deterrence and life-course criminology. For each theory we will spend one or two classes reading the leading classical and contemporary articulations of the theory and related empirical work, and then spend one or two classes applying the theory to current proposals and debates about crime policies. Throughout the course we will examine a number of areas of crime policy from one or more theoretical angles including; different approaches to community policing, incapacitative prison sentences, reentry, whether prison programming can reduce recidvism and restorative justice. Students will be expected to choose a specific crime policy and work up an evaluation and critique of it based on one or more criminological traditions.

A paper is required. In addition to readings and class discussions, students will be asked to present their research.

This course may satisfy the Writing Requirement.
