This seminar (289) and co-requisite clinic (295.5z) integrate reading, reflection and classroom discussion on the lawyer's role in providing legal services to low-income clients and community groups with student lawyering experiences at the East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC). An application is required (available on the school's clinic homepage), and concurrent enrollment in the course and clinic is mandatory for new students (advanced clinic work may be conducted in subsequent semesters with the permission of the instructor).
The course and the clinic provide students with the opportunity to learn first-hand about the professional responsibilities and challenges of representing individual and group clients, including instruction in the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct (and California-specific rules where appropriate). The course satisfies the Professional Responsibility requirement; with the addition of Law 299 units, papers prepared for this course may be developed further to satisfy the Writing Requirement.
New students work a minimum of 16 hours per week (4 units) under the close supervision of instructors in one of five clinics: 1) Clean Slate, 2) Health Law, 3) Housing Law, 4) Income Support, or 5) Neighborhood Justice or 6) Immigration and Health.
