Civil Procedure for LL.M. Students is the study of U.S. civil (non-criminal) dispute resolution systems, with an emphasis on civil litigation in the United States federal courts. The course will provide a general introduction to U.S. civil procedure, but it will focus primarily on topics that illustrate the juridical difficulties flowing from the United States' organization as a federation rather than a unitary republic, and on procedural issues that generate or significant controversy in U.S. law and politics.

While the course will cover various topics tested on the New York, California, and uniform bar exams, it is NOT a bar review course. Bar-tested topics that the course will cover include subject matter jurisdiction, territorial (personal) jurisdiction, state law in federal court, federal common law, joinder of claims and parties (including class actions), discovery, summary judgment, settlement, and civil jury trials (including post-trial motions).
