This class is aimed at exposing students (who have a working knowledge of spoken Spanish) to Spanish-language legal concepts, terminology, settings and topics. The materials and
topics will be based on law and procedure in such areas as immigration, criminal law, civil rights, housing law, environmental justice, and international human rights. The class will also address ethical and practical considerations in working with interpreters, attorney-client relations, cultural competency and client education. Guests will include native speakers familiar with the above topics.
All readings and classroom presentations, simulations and discussions will be in Spanish, with limited exceptions. Students will have the opportunity to practice, with a view toward being comfortable communicating with clients who are monolingual or dominant in Spanish.
Students will prepare a final presentation in lieu of an exam or paper.
The instructor (Patricia Salazar) is an experienced practitioner who is proficient in Spanish. As Legal Services Director of Centro Legal de la Raza, she has had a number of Spanish-speaking clients in the areas of housing and employment law and continues to work with underrepresented communities living in the East Bay. She also taught Spanish for Lawyers last year. Ms. Salazar earned her JD from UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) and her Masters degree in Public Policy from UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy.
