This seminar (Law 291.A) is a co-requisite to the Environmental Law Clinic (295.5E). The seminar will complement work in the Clinic by providing environmental subject-matter background relevant to specific Clinic projects, training in practical lawyering skills necessary for success in these projects (such as interviewing, brief writing, and case investigation), and an opportunity for discussion of and reflection on Clinic projects. The seminar will feature topical readings and other activities designed to enhance students' project experience and broaden their understanding of the varied advocacy tools available for addressing environmental concerns. The seminar seeks to train students in tactical analysis of environmental problems and solutions, so that they can begin to identify which among litigation, legislative, and policy strategies will be most effective in producing a desired environmental outcome. We also explore and provide some training in media advocacy as a means of achieving systemic reform.

This course satisfies the Skills Requirement.
Attendance at the first class is mandatory for all currently enrolled and waitlisted students; any currently enrolled or waitlisted students who are not present on the first day of class (without prior permission of the instructor) will be dropped. The instructor will continue to take attendance throughout the add/drop period and anyone who moves off the waitlist into the class must continue to attend or have prior permission of the instructor in order not to be dropped.
