After graduating from law school, Professor Peterson clerked for Judge Charles B. Renfrew of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco, practiced corporate law in San Francisco for one year, and then clerked for Justice Byron R. White of the U.S. Supreme Court. She then returned to private practice in San Francisco and specialized in litigation before joining the Boalt faculty in 1983.
Professor Peterson teaches courses in property, land-use planning and control, and the takings clause. She was awarded the Rutter Award for Teaching Distinction in 1999. Her scholarship focuses on the takings clause.
