This seminar will explore selected areas of employment and labor law. The course will focus on current critical issues. The issues will be explored in the comparative context of unionized and non-union workplaces where applicable.

The following are examples of current subjects to be covered: Regulation of internal and intra-union disputes including the Landrum-Griffin Act, trusteeships, schisms, raiding and fiduciary obligations of officers; electronic monitoring in the workplace; the public and private pension funding crisis; privacy rights in the workplace; organizing, voluntary recognition and Employee Free Choice Act issues; mandatory arbitration of employment disputes; bullying and violence in the workplace; effecting layoffs and downsizing in the recessionary economy; and family leave and responsibility issues.

Students may select paper and presentation topics from any labor or employment law issue which interests them. Students will lead the class discussion on their paper topics as part of the concluding sessions of the course. Students will complete the course with their paper. Students may satisfy the writing requirement.

No text book will be required. The course materials will consist of reading selected cases and other materials provided by the Instructor.

This course may satisfy the Writing Requirement.
