This is an overview bankruptcy course, introducing students to the core concepts applicable to both consumer and business bankruptcy. Coverage will include liquidation and reorganization forms of debt relief under chapters 7, 13, and 11 of the Bankruptcy Code. The course book contains ample explanatory text, relatively few cases, and problem sets. Much of class is devoted to discussing the problem sets, which provide a context to apply the Bankruptcy Code to situations that arise in practice. We will also consider the leading theoretical and policy debates about the appropriate scope of bankruptcy relief and its role in financial markets and the American economy. The class has no prerequisites and is a suitable introduction to commercial or debtor-creditor law.
