The writing workshop is for students working on the Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law's California Annual Review ("CAR") issue. The third issue of the CAR will be published in 2010. The past two issues of the CAR have covered recent cases, legislation, juvenile justice and corrections and rehabilitation. The Journal hopes that the CAR issue will come to be regarded as an authoritative guide to developments in California criminal law.
For the Fall course, I expect that the students will be assigned to similar topics in addition to student notes related to the development of California law and practice.
The Journal will determine enrollment. It is limited to students who apply to the Journal and agree to participate in the CAR issue. Students must follow the Journal's application procedure to gain admission to the class.
Class sessions will include readings and discussions designed to facilitate the students' work on the CAR issue. There will be occasional guest speakers. Students will collaborate in planning the publication and in editing and commenting upon each others' work.
Students will be expected to do background reading over the summer on their topic area. Students will come to the first class with a suggested research plan. During the course of the semester, students will be expected to prepare an outline, first draft, and final draft of a review or note. By the end of the semester, students should have a well-crafted 20-page draft that can be submitted to the journal for publication. Although this work product will not satisfy the writing requirement, students may consider building upon their draft or note to develop a lengthier paper to fulfill the writing requirement in a later semester.
