Finances

Tuition fees are currently estimated at $26,846.50 for summer 2016, subject to change.  Because tuition for each summer mirrors tuition for the preceding spring semester of the traditional track LL.M. program, and tuition fees tend to increase slightly from year to year, fees during the second summer will likely be somewhat higher than during the first summer.  Please see the Costs page for the latest information on tuition costs and living expenses.

If you have been awarded a scholarship, one half of the total award amount will be applied as a credit to your student billing account each summer.

Fees & Payments

Fees are billed in late-April and are due by May 15th for each summer semester.  The university does not issue paper bills or invoices. Instead, you will receive an “e-Bill”, viewable online through your BearFacts account. BearFacts is a password-protected site where you can access your e-Bill, create a profile for a parent or third-party payer, submit electronic payment from a checking or savings account, see your class schedules, grades, and other actions related to taking care of campus administrative matters. For more information about the campus billing process, see the helpful tutorials on the Billing & Payment Services website.

Your student account is called a CARS account, and there are two ways to see how much is owed – the E-bill and the Quick Statement.

Accessing Your e-Bill

The e-Bill is generated once a month and does not change once it is created, so it may not be the most accurate reflection of your current balance. It is, however, your official bill from the university. To access the e-bill:
    1. Go to bearfacts.berkeley.edu.
    2. Click Students.
    3. Log in with your CalNet ID and passphrase.
    4. Click on the CARS tab.
    5. Click on E-Bill.
    6. Read the information on the first page, and then click I Agree to move forward.
    7. Review and update your contact information if prompted. There will be a link for your monthly e-bill.

Accessing Your Quick Statement

Your quick statement is updated nightly, and is always the most accurate reflection of your CARS account balance. To access your quick statement:
    1. Go to bearfacts.berkeley.edu.
    2. Click Students.
    3. Log in with your CalNet ID and passphrase.
    4. Click on the CARS tab.
    5. Click on Quick Statement.

Payment Options

If you have a US bank account, the easiest way to pay is e-Check. Select Pay Now from the e-bill page and you will be led through the steps to enter your bank account information.

If you do not have a US bank account , the easiest way to pay is wire transfer. Please note that the receiving bank or intermediary banks may charge a small processing fee. Click here to see the university’s bank details for sending a wire transfer.

Cash and credit card payments are not accepted. Checks or money orders should be made payable to “UC Regents” and left at the drop box at the entrance of University Hall on the 2199 Addison Street side, or mailed to:
    University of California, Berkeley
    Payment Services
    140 University Hall, MC #1111
    Berkeley, CA 94720 1111

No deferred or installment payment plan is available for the summer term.

Third Party Payments

If the third party wishes to receive the entire bill directly in their name, contact the Sponsored Students Office at sponsoredstudent@berkeley.edu. You will need to provide documentation of the third party’s support in order for them to be directly billed. More information on the specific documentation required is available from that office.

If the e-bill does not need to be in the third party’s name, the student can invite the third party to view their e-bill by logging into the e-bill and selecting “Invite Parent/Other Payer.” The third party will receive an email with instructions on how to log in, and will need the student’s Student ID in order to do so. From within the e-bill, the third party can opt to pay by e-check. Information on inviting another payer can be found in this presentation: http://studentbilling.berkeley.edu/Presentations/stepbystep/index.htm

If the third party does not require access to the e-bill, they can send a payment to the student’s account directly by the One Time Payment Gateway, or by wire transfer. To use the One Time Payment Gateway, the payer must have the student’s Student ID to log in. As well, when sending a wire transfer payment the Student ID and student name should be included in the beneficiary notes.
