Will parking be provided at the law school for the day’s activities on October 1? Yes. Complimentary valet parking will be available at the corner of Bancroft Way and Piedmont Avenue. Alternatively, street parking and hourly parking in nearby public garages is available at one’s own expense.
I’d like to sign up for my class dinner as well as the tour of the South Addition. How can I do that on the registration webpage? When signing up on the registration page, click on the class dinner option as well as the tour. You will only be charged for the class dinner and we’ll know you will be attending both.
I’m considering making a planned gift this year and I want it to count toward my class reunion campaign. Which planned giving vehicles count toward the campaign? Charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and IRA charitable rollovers can count toward your reunion class gift. The IRA charitable rollover allows individuals age 70½ and older to make direct transfers from their IRAs totaling up to $100,000 per year to 501(c)(3) charities without incurring federal income tax on the withdrawal. (Many, but not all, states also allow these transfers to be made tax-free.) These gifts must be made by your plan administrator directly to the recipient charity. IRA charitable rollovers can satisfy your required minimum distribution, provided you have not already taken it for the year. (No charitable deduction is available for the rollover but you are not taxed on the withdrawal.) I heard that this year’s Citation Award Dinner is very different from past ones. What’s changed?The Citation Award Dinner marks the beginning of the law school’s Centennial celebrating Boalt’s 100th year anniversary. To kick off the Centennial events, Berkeley Law is hosting the 50th Citation Awards Dinner at the Palace Hotel on Friday, September 30th. Among this year’s award recipients are Jess Jackson ’55, Pat Herron ’64, Mitch Zuklie ’96 and Kathleen Vanden Heuvel ’86. This dinner is preceded by a “Conversation with Goodwin Liu” regarding the confirmation process which led to his being recently appointed to the California Supreme Court by Governor Jerry Brown. The Citation Award Dinner will also feature silent and live auctions, whose proceeds benefit student financial aid. A list of the exciting live auction items is here. However, some of you may only be attending your class dinners on Saturday night (or won’t be able to attend any of the weekend’s events) and so will miss out on this unique opportunity. Because we didn’t want you to miss out on the fun and the values, we’ve decided to allow everybody to participate by pre-bidding for items. Please send your pre-bid to spersson@law.berkeley.edu by September 28. The highest pre-bid will be the starting point for the live auction. We look forward to seeing you and your bids!
Professor Heyman is fondly remembered by my class and we were delighted to learn that the new South Addition has a courtyard named after him. But I understand that the law school has an opportunity to receive a $1M match for a $1M chair to be named after Heyman as well and is 95% there – How can I, or my class, help? Due to the generosity of a number of donors, the law school needs only $20K more to qualify for a $1M match to name a faculty chair after Professor Heyman. If an individual or reunion class is interested in designating a gift/pledge toward the fulfillment of this chair, not only would it mean a great deal to the law school, but it would also honor Mike Heyman’s many years of contributions to Boalt in perpetuity. By when do I need to make my pledge or gift in order for it to be counted toward my class reunion campaign? Any gift or pledge received from January 1-December 31, 2011 counts toward your class campaign. Multi-year pledges can be paid over 2-5 years, and the total amount of the pledge counts in your reunion year. Gifts/Pledges of any size count and are greatly appreciated. Of importance as well is increasing the percentage of class participation – ideally to the 100% participation level for each reunion class!
