Engaging as a Public Scholar in Uncertain Times

Friday, September 19, 2025 @ 9:30 am - 4:15 pm

Flyer for SSN: Engaging as a Public Scholar in Uncertain Times

The first months of the Trump administration have posed acute challenges in higher education. In a shifting and volatile political climate, students and faculty face growing uncertainty around the repercussions of expressing dissenting opinions and drawing on their professional expertise in public conversations. All interested Bay Area-based academics are welcome. No previous policy or media experience is required.

This daylong event will explore the challenges and possibilities of public-facing scholarship in today’s polarized environment. The program will include two hands-on trainings led by the Scholars Strategy Network:

  • How to build and maintain relationships with policymakers
  • How to write and pitch compelling op-eds

We will also welcome two remarkable speakers:

  • David Barstow, chair of the Investigative Reporting Program at Berkeley Journalism
  • Angélica Salceda, director of the Democracy, Speech, & Technology Project at ACLU of Northern California

Both speakers will be introduced by Chesa Boudin, founding executive director of the Berkeley Law Criminal Law & Justice Center and former San Francisco District Attorney.

Breakfast and lunch will be served, and participants are invited to socialize at a happy hour following the event.

Co-sponsored by the Scholars Strategy Network Bay Area Chapter and the UC Berkeley Criminal Law & Justice Center
