This course explores the evolving intersection of artificial intelligence and biotechnology law, focusing on the legal, regulatory, and ethical challenges posed by AI-driven innovation in the life sciences. Topics include, without limitation, the complexities of patenting AI-assisted inventions, regulatory compliance with data privacy laws such as HIPAA and GDPR, and the implications of algorithmic accountability in medical diagnostics and drug development. Students will also examine broader societal concerns, including algorithmic bias, and the ethical boundaries of AI-enabled genetic engineering. Through case studies and legal analysis, the course equips students to navigate the rapidly changing legal landscape of AI in biotech.

Matthew D. Show is Intellectual Property Counsel at International Flavors and Fragrences (IFF), where he handels intellectual property-related matters for the company’s Animal Nutrition & Health business. Prior to joining IFF, Dr. Show worked as an associate attorney at Morrison & Forester and Mintz Levin. Matthew holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Johns Hopkins University and is a 2010 graduate of UC Hastings College of the Law.
