This course introduces students to the research skills and strategies they will need in practice. Students learn a framework for approaching legal research, from defining the problem to developing effective strategies for finding and evaluating sources. The course covers major sources of law, including cases, statutes, regulations, local government, legislative history, and secondary sources such as treatises, practice guides, and law reviews. Students will work directly with leading the major legal research platforms, including AI-based research systems, to learn how to navigate and effectively compare tools. Through exercises and projects, students gain experience applying what they learn to research problems.

Attendance at the first class is mandatory for all currently enrolled and waitlisted students; any currently enrolled or waitlisted students who are not present on the first day of class (without prior permission of the instructor) will be dropped. The instructor will continue to take attendance throughout the add/drop period and anyone who moves off the waitlist into the class must continue to attend or have prior permission of the instructor in order not to be dropped.
