This is a workshop course, featuring a range of distinguished theorists, inside and outside Berkeley, all of whom will be addressing the course's general theme of the nature and demands of democratic citizenship. Speaker sessions (all of which will involve pre-circulated papers) will be interspersed with regular seminar sessions, which will focus on further foundational and contemporary readings concerning the ethics of democratic citizenship. Students will write a number of brief reactions to visiting speakers' papers, and will have the option of writing either three shorter (10page) papers, or one longer term paper.
