The class examines a wide range of controversies concerning the approach
that law and regulatory policy take to individuals and institutions in
the sports industry. Issues with regard to professional sports will
explore player and coaching contracts, as well as antitrust, labor, and
tax laws, and how legal doctrines impact the promotion of competitive
balance, collective bargaining, stadium financing and television rights.
Issues with regard to intercollegiate sports include the structure of
the NCAA, gender equity, amateurism and commercialization. The class
will have a closed-book final exam.
Bio:
Jason Levien currently serves as Team General Counsel and Assistant
General Manager for the Sacramento Kings, where he is involved in the
negotiation and management of players, coaching and management
contracts, free agency, salary cap planning and analysis and overseeing
team compliance with all NBA rules and procedures. Previously, Levien
was the founder and president of Levien Sports Representation, where he
served as the player-agent for a variety of NBA and NFL players, guiding
his clients through their careers, including navigating the draft
process, free agency, contract negotiations and marketing and
endorsement deals. His clientele included the Chicago Bulls' Luol Deng,
the Miami Heat's Udonis Haslem, the Kings' Kevin Martin and the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers' Earnest Graham. Levien is a graduate of Pomona College
and the University of Michigan Law School and the University of
Michigan's Gerald Ford School of Public Policy.
