This course provides a broad orientation to the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary study of law in general and the Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program at Berkeley in particular. We will explore different approaches to the study of law and legal institutions. In the first half of the course, we will examine the distinctive tools and approaches that different disciplinary fields (economics, history, philosophy, political science, and sociology) bring to bear on the study of law and legal institutions. The second half of the course will focus on topical areas of inquiry that will give you a sense of how leading scholars approach the interdisciplinary study of law and legal institutions in their own research.
The class is limited to first-year JSP students.
Attendance at the first class is mandatory for all currently enrolled and waitlisted students; any currently enrolled or waitlisted students who are not present on the first day of class (without prior permission of the instructor) will be dropped. The instructor will continue to take attendance throughout the add/drop period and anyone who moves off the waitlist into the class must continue to attend or have prior permission of the instructor in order not to be dropped.
Exam Notes: (None) Series of papers or assignments throughout the semester
(Subject to change by faculty member only through the first two weeks of instruction)
