This introductory course will explore fundamental legal and policy issues in environmental law. We will focus on the challenges posed by threats to the environment, as well as the strategies to address environmental degradation, including the common law, “command-and-control” regulation, market instruments, and information-gathering mechanisms. We will study many of the major federal environmental statutes−including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act - as well as cross-cutting issues such as federalism and environmental justice.
