This seminar examines how legal systems and policy decisions influence the causes and responses to homelessness in the United States. Students will explore the legal and practical challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness, including issues related to housing and constitutional rights. Through engagement with case law, case studies, policy analysis, and advocacy approaches, students will consider how legal frameworks shape homelessness and what reforms could advance justice. Students will have the opportunity to engage with live legal issues and develop possible solutions for impacted communities.
Attendance at the first class is mandatory for all currently enrolled and waitlisted students; any currently enrolled or waitlisted students who are not present on the first day of class (without prior permission of the instructor) will be dropped. The instructor will continue to take attendance throughout the add/drop period and anyone who moves off the waitlist into the class must continue to attend or have prior permission of the instructor in order not to be dropped.
