This course will explore the changes that have occurred in the legal and popular definition of the family over the years by probing questions about the ways in which the American legal system has regulated the family and intimate life. This course will cover basic family law issues such as marriage, divorce, parenthood, child custody, and non-traditional families. In addition to these specific topics, we will consider the role that gender, class, sexuality, gender identity, and race play in constructing the normative ideal of intimate life.
