Copyright in Europe: Is the EU Doing a Better Job of Protecting Rights and Distributing Value Online?

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

12:55 P.M. - 1:55 P.M.

Room 110

As part of its vision of a Digital Single Market, the EU has set an ambitious goal: the development of “a fair, efficient and competitive European copyright-based economy” that provides “a fair return on investment for all stakeholders.” A wide set of legislative measures has been put forward and, in part, already enacted. These include new rights for those contributing to the value chain; broader participation in copyright levies; new monitoring obligations for ISPs; mandatory statutory permissions to use copyright in research and education; and banning of unjustified geo-blocking. Nils Rauer, a partner in the Frankfurt office of Hogan Lovells, will discuss whether these initiatives lead to a better protection of digital copyright and a robust online market.

Lunch will be provided on a first come, first served basis.

Co-sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology (BCLT) and Berkeley Technology Law Journal (BTLJ).

“A Purpose Driven Practice: Making a Difference from a Big Law Platform”

For nearly 30 years, Robert Benson ‘90, a partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and a Berkeley Law alum, has practiced IP litigation at top-tier global law firms.  Abused and abandoned as a child, and subsequently adopted from a children’s shelter in the Bay Area, Robert felt a nagging desire to help others – but as an associate, he struggled with whether and how he could make a difference consistent with the demands of a family and a career in big law.  Robert will share his journey of reconciling and integrating his passion for caring for at-risk children around the world with building a leading patent litigation practice. Robert will also offer advice for others who are considering a career in big law or private practice but don’t want to surrender their commitment to having a broader impact on our world. Complimentary copies of Robert’s new book, Love Forward, will be available for those interested.

Gregoire sandwiches will be available on a first come, first served basis for those staying for the entire presentation.

Co-sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology and the Berkeley Technology Law Journal.
