“Video Game Clones: Evolution or Theft”

The video game industry generates more annual revenue than music or film. Courts have long been a battleground for video game developers in copyright disputes about “cloning,” and will continue to be so as the industry grows. Michelle Ybarra and Eduardo Santacana of Keker Van Nest & Peters will discuss how copyright disputes over videogame clones have played out over the last few decades, from the days of Atari to the large and growing smartphone game segment, and where the law may be trending in the future.

Gregoire sandwiches will be available on a first come, first serve basis and for those staying for the entire presentation.

Co-sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology and the Berkeley Technology Law Journal.

This event is open to current Berkeley Law students, Berkeley Law affiliates and BCLT law firm sponsors only.

“The Coming Opportunities at the Intersection of AI and Law Practice”

Artificial intelligence is destined to have a major impact on the future careers of today’s law students. Fred Parnon, Co-Founder of Neota Logic, will discuss opportunities for innovative use of AI in private practice, at legal aid agencies, in government, and in corporate law departments.  Parnon will provide examples of AI applications currently being developed on the Neota Logic platform, as well as other examples of AI in law practice.  While the presentation will focus on the many exciting new opportunities to be made available by AI, the presentation will also touch on some of the potentially negative impacts of AI on the future practice of law.

Gregoire sandwiches will be available on a first come, first served basis and for those staying for the entire presentation.

Co-sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology and the Berkeley Technology Law Journal.

Copyright in Europe: Is the EU Doing a Better Job of Protecting Rights and Distributing Value Online?

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

12:55 P.M. - 1:55 P.M.

Room 110

As part of its vision of a Digital Single Market, the EU has set an ambitious goal: the development of “a fair, efficient and competitive European copyright-based economy” that provides “a fair return on investment for all stakeholders.” A wide set of legislative measures has been put forward and, in part, already enacted. These include new rights for those contributing to the value chain; broader participation in copyright levies; new monitoring obligations for ISPs; mandatory statutory permissions to use copyright in research and education; and banning of unjustified geo-blocking. Nils Rauer, a partner in the Frankfurt office of Hogan Lovells, will discuss whether these initiatives lead to a better protection of digital copyright and a robust online market.

Lunch will be provided on a first come, first served basis.

Co-sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology (BCLT) and Berkeley Technology Law Journal (BTLJ).
