“What Do Patent Prosecutors Do Besides Patent Prosecution? War Stories Involving Technology Agreements, Due Diligence and Even Litigation."
Tuesday, January 12, 2016
12:45 PM - 1:45 PM
Boalt Hall, Room 105

“Patent prosecution” is a misnomer for much of the work that so-called patent prosecutors handle in daily practice.  Patent attorneys who have a “client practice” often spend their time advising clients on technology agreements, conducting or defending due diligence, and strategizing ways for their clients to utilize or avoid patent litigation.  Partner Sabing Lee ‘97, a client practice partner at Knobbe Martens in Irvine, California, will share several war stories regarding his experiences representing “patent prosecution” clients that went far beyond just writing patent applications and dealing with the U.S. Patent Office.

Lunch will be served for students staying through the entire presentation.

Sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology (BCLT), Berkeley Technology Law Journal (BTLJ), and the Patent Law Society (PLS).

BCLT/BTLJ Law & Tech Speaker Series: WhatsApp

“Your service will be blocked in three hours. What do you do now?”
Thursday, January 14, 2016
12:45 PM - 1:45 PM
Boalt Hall, Room 105

Mark Kahn ‘00, Deputy General Counsel for WhatsApp Inc., will give a talk regarding a December 2015 decision by a Brazilian court ordering backbone providers to block access to WhatsApp. Mr. Kahn will discuss the various events leading up to the block as well as the actions that WhatsApp took in response. In addition, he will touch on the significant legal and business challenges that a small US-based company faces in navigating multiple, sometimes conflicting, legal regimes.

Lunch will be served for students staying through the entire presentation.

Sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology (BCLT), the Berkeley Technology Law Journal (BTLJ), and the Berkeley Center for Law, Business & the Economy (BCLBE).

Resume Books: Collecting Resumes from Boalt Students- 1Ls, 2Ls, 3Ls and LLMs

Every year, BCLT compiles resumes for 1L and 2L students who are looking for a summer job, and 3Ls who are looking for employment after graduation. We compile these resumes into separate books for 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls and send them to BCLT sponsor law firms. This is another way to get your resume in front of prospective employers.  This year, we will also compile LLM resumes. NOTE: please recognize that BCLT sponsor firms hire very few LLMs who do not have a U.S. JD.

Please e-mail a PDF version of your resume to bclt@law.berkeley.edu by February 12, 2016.
