BCLT/BTLJ Law & Tech Series: Cooley LLP
Tuesday, February 27, 2018
12:45 pm - 1:45 pm| Room 100
Naruto v. Blurb (the “Monkey Selfie Case”)
Several years ago, a crested macaque from Indonesia snapped some pictures of himself using a photographer’s untended camera and became the unwitting subject of the now-famous “Monkey Selfies.” In 2015, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (“PETA”) and a primatologist who claimed to have known Naruto from birth filed a copyright suit in the Northern District of California on Naruto’s behalf. The suit claimed that Naruto was the author of the Selfies and that his copyright had been violated when the Selfies appeared in a book the photographer created using Blurb’s online publishing service.
Please join Blurb’s counsel, Angela Dunning of Cooley LLP, for an in-depth discussion of the issues and Blurb’s winning defenses in this widely publicized case, which remains pending in the Ninth Circuit.

Net Neutrality - What Happens Next?
A Fireside Chat with FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn
Last December, the FCC majority voted to repeal the 2015 net neutrality rules,
which ensured the internet was an open and non-discriminatory platform for
democratic participation and economic innovation. Many ask: What does the
future of the internet look like now? How will start-ups flourish without open
and free access to the internet? How will you use social media as a tool to
organize against injustices? What can I do? Join FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn in conversation with UC Berkeley law professor Tejas Narechania to discuss the future of net neutrality.
Lunch will be provided on a first come, first served basis.
Sponsored by American Constitution Society (ACS), Consumer Advocacy Protection Society (CAPS), and Berkeley Center for Law & Technology (BCLT).
