A conversation with attorney Erika Rottenberg from Twilio.

 

Erika is on the Board of both Twilio, a leading cloud-based communications platform and Wix.com, a leading cloud-based web development platform. She is privileged to help mentor women, executives, young professionals and students, and advise companies that are scaling globally, especially in the evolving global privacy, data security and corporate arenas. While she was General Counsel at LinkedIn, she was an experienced, results-oriented, values-based global Executive and GC whose Legal, Policy and Privacy Department’s mission was to drive business results by ensuring the freedom to operate lawfully while promoting LinkedIn’s values and culture.

 

Ms. Rottenberg also served as a Consultant of SumTotal Systems, LLC from August 1, 2008 to December 2008 and its Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary from March 2004 to July 31, 2008. She served as Vice President of Strategic Development and General Counsel at Creative Labs Inc. She was an Attorney with a law firm of Cooley Godward, where she practiced corporate and employment law for technology companies. She has over 15 years of experience in the boardroom and the executive suite, with additional expertise in privacy, cybersecurity, intellectual property and corporate governance. She provided valuable experience in dealing with the regulatory policies and challenges specific to technology centric public companies.

Mark Mao ‘04 and Deanna Kwong ‘04 will speak on autonomous cars and privacy litigation. The talk will be livestreamed and posted on our page, facebook.com/bipla.edu.

Ten million self-driving cars may share the road the by 2020. Self- driving vehicles and other connected devices will provide benefits, but also pose risks to the privacy and safety of consumers. Recently, regulators have taken note. In September 2017, the Department of Transportation (DOT) issued its voluntary guidance entitled “Automated Driving Systems (ADS): A Vision For Safety 2.0,” and the House of Congress also H.R. 3388, entitled the “Safety Ensuring Lives Future Deployment and Research In Vehicle Evolution Act,” or the “SELF DRIVE Act.” This talk will explore the challenges of connected devices, and the litigation risks for when these devices fail.

 

Mark Mao ‘04, Partner at Troutman Sanders, will draw on his deep expertise to discuss statutory developments in the Internet of Things and the future of privacy litigation.

Giving consumers control over their data has long been a goal of privacy policy, but it can be challenging achieve We will discuss practical constraints and policy considerations in designing a “data dashboard” that would allow consumers to control the data that a retailer could use to target marketing, including data feeds from web browsing history, mobile devices, and smart home and personal assistant technologies. This will be an interactive training.

White House OSTP accepting applications for Spring 2018 legal internships


The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is currently accepting applications for Spring 2018 Legal internships. The deadline to apply for a Spring 2018 legal internship is October 10, 2017. OSTP's "small firm" environment gives law students the opportunity to work under the supervision of OSTP's General Counsel and other supervising attorneys on Executive Orders, proclamations, memos to the President and senior White House officials, ethics opinions, Freedom of Information Act requests, and legal research and writing projects. OSTP Legal interns also work closely with senior White House officials on science and technology matters that cut across OSTP's policy divisions. Topics can range from infectious disease and natural disasters to drones, internet policy, innovation, the environment, and more. Interns gain practical legal experience working with government attorneys on a wide diversity of challenging substantive matters, such as ethics, information disclosure, international agreements, litigation, legislative affairs, Congressional oversight, constitutional law, statutory interpretation, employment, appropriations, fiscal law, and government contracts.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled in law school or an LLM program during the internship term. Legal internships are open only to law students and LLM students. Students who are not enrolled in law school or an LLM program will not be considered for legal internships. These positions are without compensation; however, students .
