Durie Tangri Partner Joe Gratz has litigated some of the highest-profile and some of the lowest-profile fair use cases in recent years. Joe will talk about lessons learned from litigating those cases, which include the Google Books case, the Shepard Fairey “Hope” poster case, the Beastie Boys “Girls” case, and a dispute nobody’s ever heard of between scholars of 17th-century Spanish literature.

Engaging Contradictions: Research, Action, and Justice workshop series is happening next week. Under the Radar: Research and Technology in an Age of Surveillance

What legal, practical, and theoretical tools allow us to navigate the challenges that surveillance presents to researchers, particularly those engaged with organizations, social movements, and targeted communities? Join us for Under the Radar: Research and Technology in an Age of Surveillance, the second workshop in the Engaging Contradictions: Research, Action, and Justice workshop series. This workshop features three complementary sessions.

Please join us at 5:00 pm on March 21, 2017 at UC Berkeley for a free screening of The State of Eugenics, the just-released film about the eugenic sterilization program North Carolina ran between the 1930's and 1970's. The film documents how that long-forgotten program was brought back to light by researchers and journalists, resulting in a pitched political battle over compensating victims.
Comments and Q&A after the screening by filmmaker Dawn Sinclair Shapiro and University of Michigan Professor Alexandra Minna Stern.

The Berkeley Center for Law & Technology (BCLT) will present an overview of the law and technology curriculum at Boalt, with a specific focus on Fall 2017 course offerings. BCLT Executive Director Jim Dempsey will lead the session; faculty will describe the diverse career paths available in law & technology and the exciting courses available.
The discussion will help students decide what courses to take next semester and how to plan their 2L and 3L schedules in order to take full advantage of the law and technology curriculum and to meet the Law & Tech Certificate requirements.

The ABA Center for Innovation and Microsoft have announced a unique new fellowship opportunity for recent law school graduates. The ABA Center for Innovation-Microsoft NextGen Fellow will gain invaluable experience while positively impacting the delivery of legal services to those most in need of assistance. In residence at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, the NextGen Fellow will spend most of his or her time helping to advance the an ABA-Microsoft project with the Legal Services Corporation that is creating statewide online justice portals, but will also contribute to a variety of other technology initiatives. ACLU-Northern California Spring and Summer 2017 Law & Policy Internship Program
The ACLU of Northern California invites applications for Spring and Summer 2017 internships in its Legal-Policy Department. Internships are full- or part-time, generally requiring a 16–24 hours per week commitment. Interns will be eligible for Law School field placement credit. Students must commit to working all semester (12–14 weeks). The ACLU prefers that part-time interns commit to work full work days (i.e., two eight-hour days rather than four four-hour days) and recommends that students commit as many days a week as possible for the best internship experience. The Law & Technology Certificate recognizes successful completion of a specialized course of study in addition to an activity component. The curricular requirements emphasize depth and breadth of coverage and afford students substantial flexibility in adapting their course of study toward a range of career paths at the growing intersection of law and technology.
