Dear Students and Faculty,

Welcome back from the long weekend.

This week's BCLT/BTLJ Law & Tech Speaker Series features presentations from Hogan Lovells US LLP on Tuesday and Kirkland & Ellis LLP on Thursday.

Save the date! The BCLT Spring Tech Fair is coming up, in February. More details to come.

Resume Books - Collecting from all Boalt Students (1Ls, 2Ls, 3Ls, & LL.M.s)

Every year, BCLT compiles resumes for 1L and 2L students who are looking for a summer job and 3Ls who are looking for employment after graduation. We compile these resumes into separate books for 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls and send them to BCLT sponsor law firms. This is another way to get your resume in front of prospective employers. This year, we will also compile LL.M. resumes (but please recognize that BCLT sponsor law firms hire very few LL.M.s who do not have a U.S. J.D.). Please email a PDF version (1 page) of your resume to BCLT Assistant Director Claire Trias at ctrias@berkeley.law.edu by Friday, February 10, 2017.

UPCOMING EVENTS

BCLT/BTLJ Law & Tech Speaker Series: Hogan Lovells US LLP

"Winning and Losing Patent Cases: Civil Procedure Matters"
Tuesday, January 17, 2017
12:45 PM - 1:45 PM
Boalt Hall, Room 105

Chris Mammen, leading litigator from Hogan Lovells, will explain how the rules of civil procedure can have a profound impact on the course of a patent case. This year, the Supreme Court is considering TC Heartland, which could upend the rules of venue for patent cases and end the dominance of the Eastern District of Texas. Meanwhile, seemingly small amendments made in 2015 to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure are impacting patent litigation.

Sponsored by Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, Berkeley Technology Law Journal, and Berkeley Law Information Privacy Law Association.

This event is open to current Berkeley Law students, Berkeley Law affiliates and BCLT law firm sponsors only.

12:45 PM - 1:45 PM

Boalt Hall, Room 105

Turner Boyd LLP associates Jacob Zweig and Letitia Lee, will share a day in the life of an IP Litigation associate. They will mainly share their experiences and insights on two fronts: (1) our career paths – what we did to get to where we are, and (2) the requisite skillsets of an IP litigator – what skills we need to be where we are. Please join Jacob and Letitia for this exciting lunch discussion.

Co-sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology and the Berkeley Technology Law Journal.

This event is open to current Berkeley Law students, Berkeley Law affiliates and BCLT law firm sponsors only.

Weil Silicon Valley M&A Forum

February 9, 2017
11:45 AM - 2:00 PM
Four Seasons Hotel, Palo Alto
(Transportation from Boalt being planned)

Students who may be interested in corporate legal practice or specifically in tech company acquisition work are invited to attend the Weil Silicon Valley M&A Forum, to be held at the Four Seasons in Palo Alto from 11:45-2PM on Thursday, February 9th.  The M&A Forum is hosted by Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, which boasts one of the premier M&A practices nationwide and one of the most active M&A practices within the tech industry in particular.  Weil’s M&A group has been involved in such transactions as Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp and Apple’s acquisition of Beats.  Lunch is served to all attendees.

The Forum will include updates on M&A trends and developments and on the “ins and outs” of negotiating M&A deals.  About 100-150 people typically attend the M&A Forums, including general counsels and other in-house lawyers at publicly traded and privately held companies; corporate executives with a specific interest in M&A transactions; partners and associates from Weil and other select firms; investment bankers; and other M&A professionals.

Berkeley Law students receive a special invitation to attend the Forums.  This is a fantastic opportunity to network, learn more about recent headline transactions, and gain exposure to the “real world” of corporate practice more generally.  Four recent Berkeley Law alums, Cristiana Blauth Oliveira, William Lamb, Max Ronci and Thomas Umberg, benefited from attending the Forums and ultimately joined Weil’s Silicon Valley office after learning more about the practice.

ACLU-Northern California Spring and Summer 2017 Law & Policy Internship Program

The ACLU of Northern California invites applications for Spring and Summer 2017 internships in its Legal-Policy Department. Internships are full- or part-time, generally requiring a 16–24 hours per week commitment. Interns will be eligible for Law School field placement credit. Students must commit to working all semester (12–14 weeks). The ACLU prefers that part-time interns commit to work full work days (i.e., two eight-hour days rather than four four-hour days) and recommends that students commit as many days a week as possible for the best internship experience. (For details about field placement credits, contact Sue Schechter, sschechter@law.berkeley.edu.)
