“Section 337 Litigation before the International Trade Commission”
Thursday, February 18, 2016
12:45 PM - 1:45 PM
Boalt Hall, Room 105

The International Trade Commission – or “ITC” – is a quasi-judicial federal agency that, among other duties, investigates unfair trade practices.  Such practices include the importation of an article covered by a US patent, copyright, or trademark.  Thus, in many cases, the ITC can provide an alternative forum for intellectual property disputes and has a number of features that make it desirable.  Partner Bas de Blank from Orrick LLP will cover the ITC, its unique jurisdictional requirements and procedural quirks, and strategic considerations in bringing or defending an ITC action.

Lunch is served for students staying through the entire presentation.

This event is open to current Berkeley Law students and BCLT sponsor law firms only.

Co-sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology and the Berkeley Technology Law Journal.

Announcement from the CDO: 2016 Loyola Patent Law Interview Program

We wanted to make you aware of this program, scheduled to take place in Chicago on Thursday, August 4 and Friday, August 5, even though it conflicts with our major on-campus interview program, EIW (Early Interview Week), which will take place here in Berkeley from Monday, August 1 through Friday, August 5.

In the past, the annual Loyola Program took place prior to EIW, making it easier for rising 2L and 3L students with engineering/tech science backgrounds -- and who were interested in working for patent law employers -- to participate in both the Loyola Program and EIW.  This year, the scheduling complicates matters, particularly for members of the Class of 2018 who will have many more options in EIW, so we urge you to talk to a CDO counselor if you are considering participating in the Loyola Program.

Last year, roughly 140 employers, 190 law schools, and 1,300 law students from across the country participated in the Loyola Program.  Unlike EIW, which is entirely lottery-based (i.e, employers don't have advance access to your grades), the Loyola Program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit resumes and transcripts to bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the materials of the students who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program.  You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.

For more information on the program, please refer to the Loyola Patent Program website>>

Online student registration for this year’s Patent Law Interview Program is now open and will close on Thursday, March 10.  Online registration is available here>>.  At this stage of registration, you will only need to enter some basic information (you will upload your resume and bid on interviews later in the semester).  Please note that our school is listed alphabetically as University of California, Berkeley, School of Law on the registration form’s drop down menu of law schools.

Berkeley Law will be paying the $35 registration fee for our students, so you will not be charged anything when you register online.

Once you have registered, the program staff will communicate with you directly via email to the address that you entered when registering for the program.

Please direct any questions about the program to Marty Grenhart in the CDO at mgrenhart@law.berkeley.edu. She is the Patent Program Liaison for Berkeley Law.
