Violent Intruder

While unlikely, if a violent intruder enters the Law Building, knowing how to respond can save lives.

First, if it is possible to flee the building safely and avoid danger, do so. In the event of an active shooter it is crucial to get as far away from the shooting scene and then contact the Police Department at 510-642-3333 to notify them of your location. If you are unsure of where the shooter is located, do not attempt to flee.

If it is not possible to flee the area safely, you will need to secure-in-place and follow these instructions:

  • Go dark. Turn off all the lights and close window shades.
  • If possible, lock all windows and doors.
  • Barricade the entrance if possible (heavy furniture, etc.)
  • Stay low and away from doors and windows.
  • Silence your cell phone and hide under a desk or behind furniture.
  • Develop a plan to counter the attacker (have items to throw…laptops, chairs, etc.)

After fortifying your space, notify others if possible.  Call the police at 510-642-3333 if that seems practical.

There is no one recommended procedure for what to do if the shooter comes into your room or office, but it is crucial that you formulate a plan to do something. While attempting to overcome the individual with force is a last resort that should only be initiated in the most extreme circumstances, your chances of survival depend on doing something to try to stop the shooter.

Do not leave your space until you receive an “all-clear” instruction given by an authorized voice.  When first responders arrive, follow instructions and keep hands visible.
